2001 S40 1.9T starts but does not idle

Post by musicman »

Hello everyone, I have a 2001 S40 1.9T with 160K miles. Currently the vehicle will start but will not idle, and if I keep my foot on the gas it will not stall, as soon as I let off the gas the car immediately stalls.
I am getting the following codes:

P0015 : B Camshaft Position Timing Over-Retarted Bank 1
P0335 : Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit
P0442 : Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (small leak)

Last time I plugged in the OBDII code reader I had the 0015 and 0335 codes come up but the car drove fine. I would like to try and take a stab at this myself if anyone has ideas. The problem started after the coldest night last week, I did put in dry-gas and there was a half tank of gas and the car would not start, two days later and it happens to be above freezing and like I said before it starts but will not idle. Any advice or experience in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

The 442 probably isn't a big issue, maybe just a gas cap, but the others sound like they could affect the running of the engine. The other two codes, now I'm not speaking from experience but they almost sound like something that a jumped timing belt might cause. Check your timing belt. I don't know the S40 but timing belts are super critical if the car uses one.

Thanks rmmagow for your feedback, timing belt was changed @ 92k. It starts great just wont idle, wondering if crankshaft position sensor is faulty...

ok so car is running now, shop had done fuel filter, starter, crankshaft sensor, cleaned throttle body AND made adjustment to the idle position. I drove the car for a day and then the same issue arose, after spending good money I was not pleased with results. I made adjustment to the idle position (screw that connects to the throttle) and then it would idle. Wondering if i stretched the throttle line trying to start it back when fuel line was froze? Or maybe there is another issue that the obdii is not showing? Any thoughts?

I am having similar issues. Car starts but will not idle. A member told me the Idle control valve needs cleaning. It is easy to do since it sits right up next to the throttle body under the plastic cover, to the right of the center of the engine. Black plastic cover, covers the throttle body. Remove it and you can see the idle control valve. Check this site for the visuals, it helps tons. Clean it out good and it frees up the sticking valve. Car idles great now and the only money spent was the electrical parts cleaner. I used a toothbrush and you'll need a new gasket for the idle control valve. The old one does not always stay in one piece.

My fan keeps turning on after the car is shut off. The engine is cold and the fan keeps running for over 5 minutes sometimes closer to 10. I can turn the key on and then off immediately and the darn fan comes on for awhile. I was told this could be the culprit for the idling problem also since the sensor is sending a crazy signals. This is the only other problem it could be. Since everything else has been done within the last year or so.

Musicman & jbjs40, did not hear the ROOT Cause/ solution from either of you. Did you ever figure it out?

I of course have the same problem. Have cleaned the ICV, still same. REPLACED/Installed a NEW ICV (idle control valve) - Same problem.

If you guys have found new info since you last posted I'd very much like to hear?

No codes?

My first suspicion would be a vacuum leak. Check the hoses for cracks and or that their disconnected.
Does it slowly die, or cut out immediately after releasing taking your foot off the gas?
Have you tried cleaning the throttle body?

You can try unplugging the MAF and seeing if it's any better.

Alschnertz – in 2013 MusicMan and jbjs40 had posted the same problem and I was hoping they got to ROOT Cause, guess not? One simply adjusted the mechanical throttle to hold a high idle and been running this car like that since Jan 2013 is what it sounds like. ? JBJS40 did also have same problem , and he never got to or posted ROOT Cause either. ? Dang, I promise I will post ROOT Cause when/if I find it (hard to fathom this problem has not already been identified in this forum - I did spend hours searching, aw well, start new here and now).

To be clear here is my cars current status:
Symptom: Starts but does not idle; runs fine with foot operating the throttle, but stalls immediately if you remove foot.
Originally it ran for a week after purchasing car, then the problem appeared intermittently, 2-3 times in one week – wouldn’t idle upon start-up but then ran fine after it was run/warm for several minutes. THEN, a few days later, it became a HARD FAILURE, constant all the time will die without operating the throttle. FYI; OTHER odd note, similar to post by jbjs40 about the FAN coming on even when cold.

ACTIONs ALREADY DONE:
1) Removed and cleaned ICV (idle control valve)
2) Bought and installed brand new ICV
3) Ordered an OBDii reader to get codes (but from other posts here I don’t see this leading to resolve)

CURRENT ACTIONS:
So last night I bought STARTER FLUID to go hunting for vacuum leaks. Will post results when I have them.
I’m not clear on what ‘cleaning the throttle body’ means exactly. What is this part look like?
