Disconnecting ECU == replacing harness?

Post by Krampus »

In my Bentley manual, I noticed a rather cryptic note that unplugging the harness to the engine control unit (front of the passenger-side engine bay) would damage the connector irrepairably and require the entire harness to be replaced. No futher infromation about the nature of the damage or why it's necessitates replacing the entire harness is provided. Does anyone know what the concern with unplugging it is? On mine, it unplugged rather easily and looked to be a pretty typical connector.

I have searched through several books for an answer to this and all I can come up with is the attached from a publication from Volvo Cars U.S. This bulletin is for cars from 1983-1988.

And the award for quality in documentation goes to... Volvo! :) Thanks for trying to look, Bill. I looked at the connector, and the only thing I can think they could be possibly referring to as a "one way sleeve" are the little clips on the side which I had carefully popped out with a pick. Even if I had snapped them, I'd think there to be much less drastic fixes than redoing the whole harness.
