Crazy squealing/grinding sound on start up

Post by marklawder »

I will try and describe what is going on, but this video explains it all. On start up I get this obnoxious squealing or grinding sound for 10-20 seconds then a metallic, hollow, "ping" or "shunk" and it disappears (ping sound at :23 in the video). I thought this was belt related, but why would it go away like it does? This is a 1995 850 (not a turbo). Any help is appreciated. Thanks. Oh yea, ignore the red fuel line, I did that a few years a go and it hasn't ever been an issue.

The pinion gear is still engaged with the flywheel when it should retract.
This starter is in need of replacement. The bushings are worn and is beyond repair.

Hi ed, thank you for your diagnosis. I replaced the starter and the sound is no more, car seems to be running fine.

do yourself a favour and change the seal on the oil filler cap. Will make for less grime in the hood and better smelling interior..
