Volvo XC90 strut brace mount

Post by chisholm »

How much movement should there be when you grab the brace and shake? Car has 185k miles and there is at least 1 inch of play front to rear when I grab it.
If I replace the pair from Groton, what's the torque setting to crank them down to?
Thanks,
Chisholm

Are you talking about the bearing plate or the spring seat?

Bearing plates are around 35Nm and the top nut on the spring seat I usually tighten to very snug with a large adjustable spanner. (around 14 inch adjustable)

From the Groton Web site:
Volvo XC90 Right and Left Strut Brace Mount
Replace your Volvo XC90 front strut brace mount today and improve your vehicle's handling. The strut brace is one of several important strut parts that serves to improve the suspension of your vehicle. This Volvo XC90 strut brace mount is a piece used to improve the fitting of your strut brace, or strut bar, providing for extra stiffness.

There are a pair of them that go from the top of the struts to a black rectangular bar. It is that bar that moves - a lot!

I replaced mine with the solid ones from IPD. Though they are north of $100, I figured it'd help with the handling some. Honestly, I can't really tell the difference in day-to-day driving, but we don't really push our XC90 around corners.

With that said, as for torque, I am sure that there's a spec somewhere, but I just tightened until it was "good n'uff" with a half inch drive ratchet.
