Consistently after I start the car and drive away, at the first instance of 2500 RPMs I hear a "thin" metallic scrape. It only lasts a second and then is not heard again until the car has been parked, restarted and accelerates to the 2500 RPM mark.
What might this be?

I have a similar noise after I back out of the driveway and go forward about 40 feet. It lasts about half a second. It only does this on morning start up, reverse and forward movement. This has been happening for years (2002 XC70). I have had transmission fluid changes, updated the trans servo (IPD) and suspension components (shocks, CVs and motor and trans mounts). The car has also had brake rotors and pads replaced as well. Any ideas??
Good feedback Polarice70. I have been experimenting and it would seem that RPMs are not the critical factor and that it may be distance that triggers the noise. 2500 RPM just happens to be the point I typically hear it when accelerating out of my driveway. If I creep along and keep the RPMs low I can still get the sound and at about the same distance.
I haven't been too worried about (more curious than anything else) but it is good to hear that you have been experiencing the same sort of thing for a long while without any apparent ill effects.
If I had to guess, I suspect it has something to do with the AWD. I don't use the emergency brake when parking but if I did I would speculate that the sound could be a "sticky" e-break cable releasing. It's a strange little noise. It definitely seems as though it comes from the middle or back of the car - not from the engine compartment.

In your brake pads there is a built in "warning" that your pads are wearing too low. This makes the sound you are describing… If you keep driving can cause damage to the rotor (or disc) from the scraping of the worn pads..
