Totally different fault to this gearbox. This car edges forward in neutral and has no reverse. I suspect valve body failure; fluid is black and worth a try to replace.
Could it be that the PNP switch is incorrectly set or the shift linkage out of alignment? Just my thoughts...

Keep up posting it is interesting to follow.

As engine is loaded when in P or N it has something to do with hydraulic flow rather than what gear the TCM thinks the engine is in. Something is slowing down the engine. The reverse lights work (well they did yesterday but that's another story)

Right now I have to rebuild the original ETM to see if that's why I'm getting ETM codes and Reduced Performance messages.

A new problem which has surfaced this morning is no rear doorlocks/tailgate locks/fuel flap power as well as no rear wiper and no reverse lights. All fuses are fine so it's time to see which relays in the rear compartment are shared.

Mike I think if I go to that much trouble I'll just replace the valve body either with a new '03 one or a remanufactured unit as these symptoms don't seem to be solenoid problems; remember it actually drives and shifts really well in D. Also 1st gear and reverse share the solenoid, however only 1st gear works.

Driver's side spring seat or what's left of it. With spring compressors, an air wrench and a grinder got the suspension unit out and put in a new spring seat. The grinder was used to cut the last 1/2 inch off the top of the spring seat so I could have access to the star nut. It was an original spring seat with an 00 build year so not bad for 12 years.

The shifter cable mechanism/PNP switch combination could be out of position or alignment.

It is something to consider. The following thread is not applying directly to your model/year but it can help.

Thanks DGM for your input. The PNP has a certain range of adjustment which can't limit the gear positions.

Park is there, as are the other positions. They all show up on the dash as correct when cycling when the shift cable is connected.

When the car is placed into Park with the wheels down it jerks forward and almost drives. This has damaged the gearbox at some stage prior to my acquisition

I've also disconnected the cable and cycled the gears by hand on the lever. Park definitely won't lock the 'box.

Battery was flat so put in another charged battery and looks like the BCM sprang back to life by giving power back to rear wipers, rear door/tailgate locks and allowing reverse lights to work...... Looks like this is going to be a long and dusty haul.

Thanks Mike, haven't seen that one yet; it's certainly a very detailed fault finding manual. When it's time will get to know it better.

I drove the XC this morning and the forward progress isn't too bad; the trans shifts and downshifts into all gears, though downshifting with the geartronic gives some terrible backlash. The really bad thing is that the motor breaks down at anything over 40% throttle. I've rebuilt the ETM with a contactless sensor and recalibrated it to the same output voltage as the old sensor but I still have an ETM code relating to low current. I'm going to check the earth at the engine block and see if this sorts things.
