Shimmy on left turns

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Shimmy on left turns

Post by 360robertg »

Hi, I have a 2004 S80 that I just bought. I test drove it by myself and loved it, but as soon as anyone rides with me I have a shimmy when I turn the car left. I've taken it to a couple of mechanics, and they couldn't find anything (they are probably test driving it by themselves). If anyone has any ideas on what could be broken, or possible adjustments, I would really appreciate it. I love this car when I drive by myself.

Does it make a difference whether the power is applied or not?

Possibly an inner CV joint going south. Usually the inner CV will rumble/vibrate under power as it gets worn but the vibaraion will stop if you lift off. You can get a cheap reman shaft with both joints in it from O'Reilly auto parts, I think mine was like $59 + core. Its not too hard to swap, you'll need to separate the control arm from the wheel hub however and will need to make something to force the control arm down and out of the way of the balljoint.

Hey Boosted, are those O'Reilly axles actual Volvo parts that have been re-machined? If so (and assuming they didn't grind the grooves out too much), then that's not a bad price. If all thet do is re-pack them and install new boots then that's another story....

That doesn't sound too hard. I have most of the tools I need already. Now I just have to figure out if its the front or rear shaft. I forgot to mention the all wheel drive part.

I doubt they are original Volvo parts and for the price I'm not bothered to look too closely. The way I see is if they are only 20% of the quality of the originals, I'm good for 40K. That'l do for me, im sure the GM tranny will explode before then! :D

I've replaced the axles in two cars so far with rebuilt OE units from Axles Unlimited. My V70 was done about 14 months ago and my daughter's Hyundai was done about 6 months ago. So far, so good. I hope they go a little more than 40,000 miles cuz I hate doing that job :|
