Going catless with OBX turbo back exhaust?

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

Going catless with OBX turbo back exhaust?

Post by DWhyle »

I have an '94 855t which I am either going to start modding or sell in favor of something better (855R). I live in Wisconsin where emissions testing is only required on cars 1996 and later. What complications will I run into if I go catless? I'm planning on an ARD green tune among other things. Is anyone running the OBX? The price is very attractive, but is it a cheap piece of crap? Should I just go with IPD as I first planned?

I had an OBX exhaust (catless) with the ARD green tune. Zero issues at all.

You won't run into any problems running catless as long as you let ARD know that the car is catless so they can tune for it. I know someone who even passed emissions running catless with an ARD tune. According to the data collected at the emissions testing facility, the car ran cleaner catless with ARD tune than it did when it was stock with a cat.

As far as the OBX system, the only problem you might run into is cracking at the weld between the downpipe and the turbine outlet flange. I would encourage you not to let this influence your decision too much since getting this problem fixed with a high quality bead weld will cost far less than the difference in price between OBX and ipd.

welcome to the forum! I'm from wisconsin as well! I just ordered an OBX exhaust and was debating if i should cut my cat out (of my existing exhaust and weld it in) or just go catless. Glad to see others from Wisco on the forum!

Where are you guys finding your obx exhaust systems? Looking for one for my 95 wagon and saw that quite a few of you are running obx... Glad to see the Ard tune will take care of the no cat situation as well!

They sell some Volvo stuff on eBay but they will make a better deal if you just call them directly. The web page doesn't cover all of the Volvo stuff they actually have. The web page is more dedicated to Ricers but a phone call will get you what you need. I have also heard the system will work just fine with a spacer threaded into the rear O2 sensor tap even with a stock 4.3 or 4.4 ECU.

Any other places besides sparktec? I ordered the exhaust and 2 days later got a refund because it was Backordered and the few other places I tried on eBay said they didn't have it...

Hey guys, I am new to MVS. I have a '98 V70 T5. I've had the OBX turbo back system for 6 months now. No problems, love the sound , and couldn't beat the price, ($400).
The only problem I had was finding someone who actually had it in stock. Apparently mine was on back order for a couple of months. Can't really compare it to the IPD system since I have neither seen or heard one in person but for the money it was definitely worth the risk. Sounds great especially at idle! I will try yo take some pictures next time I get the car up in the air. Thanks

Forgot to mention the catalytic converter deletion. I was able to "overcome" that obstacle by lifting the rear oxygen sensor out of direct flow of the exhaust using a drilled out spark plug anti-fouler. The are normally used on older vehicle that burn oil. Anyways, my ECM ran and passed the catalytic monitor by doing this.
