Post PCV service problem

Post by RyanT5 »

Ok so im new to volvo, bought a 98 s70 t5 about 6 weeks ago, knowing about the pcv system needing servicing as well as the rear exhaust cam seal. I got the cam seal done first because it was literally just spewing oil when driving. I ordered a full pcv kit from FCP, and changed out all hoses and the oil trap. I also cleaned out the PTC nipple as well as the 2 ports going into the engine block. Car was driving great, no more dipstick smoke, no oil leaks, and my MPG went up almost 4 miles! Well about a week or so ago i noticed a small spot under my car after i parked it. Popped the hood and sure enough theres oil all over the top of my motor just like before. My dipstick handle is broken and has no o-ring. Although it makes the engine look messy, its really not affecting my oil level at all. I guess im just concerned, and my question is does anyone have any idea what a secondary cause of this oil coming out of the dipstick tube(maybe oil cap as well) could be? I love this car and just want it to stop spewing from the dipstick! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A couple things come to mind:

(1) It is very common for the gasket on the oil cap to become hardened and useless, and leaky. Check it out.

(2) There is an o-ring at the top of the dipstick, also is it soft and pliable or hard and cracked etc?

The oil cap seal seams to be fine, however my dipstick is broken at the top and has no seal. I was under the impression that the dipstick tube should not be under positive pressure, but your response is making me wonder now. Even with a fully functioning pcv system could the absence of the dipstick o-ring still cause this small amount of oil to blow-by? Thanks for the response by the way!

A clogged PCV will blow the dip stick out. Make sure it has a good seal and put another stick in so it's proper. Then if you have a problem with the stick or oil on top of the motor you may have another issue.

If you hooked up the oil box top lines properly you should be ok. The hose from the top of the motor should be hooked up on the oil box closest to the block and timing belt. The other hose, port closest to the rad and drivers side goes around to the PTC.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna replace the dipstick and go from there. Hoping its just the lack of dipstick o-ring!
