Help needed soldering 3.5 jack onto HU-605 board

Post by regiment23 »

Hello all,

I have a 2001 V40. I am trying to connect a 3.5 mm jack plug connector to the head unit. I have removed the CD cartridge and the tape cartridge. It is a HU-605. There is a white ribbon connector from the tape cartridge to the main PCB. Is this the ribbon I need to solder into? It is labelled on one side but has no PIN numbers . Can you help please?

Respectfully,
Jim. :D

Hi Jim, I moved your topic to the "Volvo Car Audio, iPod, XM, GPS, DVD, Speakers, Amps, Radar Detectors" forum. I hope someone will be able to help you, I don't know the answer.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

Hi Jim

No, you need to solder to the pcb board on the right of the unit when you remove the tape assembly. I also have the 605 unit in my 02 S40.

I used fazool's thread to find the solder points on mine -

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 33&t=47478

it has a great description and good photo's to show where to solder.

This is what I ended up with -

I followed the instructions and grounded the common wire (yellow) to the screw point but the problem I have now though is I'm getting really poor sound quality and even interference when I accelerate (which may be more down to my crappy soldering than anything!!). I intend to re-try fixing the wires etc and see if better contacts improves the sound etc.
If not, I have read somewhere about using the CD changer din port to do the same thing so if this method doesn't work for me I may try that next.

When you've done it let me know how it turns out - I'd love to know if it's something I've done wrong!

Cheers
Gary
