Tape on the 850 Dash?

I've seen this tape or the adhesive left behind by this tape on a number of but not all 850's. What is it? TIA.

Are you talking about the brown spot to the right of the steering column?
I can't say for sure, but you may be on to something about remaining adhesive. Maybe from a SRS sticker or something like that?

How can you see what color the tape is. The cassette door is closed.

My wagon had this on the dash when I bought it. It seemed to be a plastic sheet, fastened behind the soft gray portion of the dash. I didn't care for it, so pulled it off. No idea of the purpose of it, but for what it's worth, I also had the plain black plastic dash. Now my wagon has the correct R wood dash.

Its a key guard. My R had that up until I bumped it on accident cleaning. Shattered like glass.

Shattered like glass? I've only seen this shield in pictures and have always thought it looked like a strip of packing tape. My 96 850 turbo wagon came with a lot of options but this shield wasn't one of them unless the adhesive was well cleaned away by the PO. A silly question that will nag me no more. Thanks again!

Maybe this is a stupid question, but what is a key guard. If it is what its name implies what the heck would someone be sticking a key under there for anyway? And if they did what is so fragile about that particular part of the dash that it would need protection from a key? I know its a lot of questions but it just seems absurd so I know I must be missing something.

I would imagine it guards from swinging key chains with junk hanging from them. I am guilty. My keys swing into my knee all the time and I am still too lazy to unclip the carabiner that holds my other keys from my car keys.
