Hi all
My S60 has recently started to sound very noisy, and the sound seems to be linked to the speed of the wheels rather than what the engine is doing (i.e. revving the engine makes no difference, but the noise is still loud when slowing down and not touching the accelerator pedal).
Has anyone encountered something similar, or does anyone have any ideas as to what I should get checked?
Cheers
Chris

Chris,
Have you looked at this thread? https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat/p ... php?t=3835
Is it anything like your problem? If it is the answer is still out there somewhere.
Nice plug for the show but I don't think many in the US will be able to hear it.
Bill.

The noise is probably best described as a loud "whirring", which seems to be coming from the passenger-side front wheel.
It has got louder over the last couple of months, and although it doesn't seem to affect the performance of the car in any way, it is starting to get a bit worrying.
(PS - regarding the radio show link - there is a podcast, so people in the US can indeed listen if they like!)

Chris,
It would seem that lots of members have a similar problem and no real answer. My neighbour has the same on his 2003 S60. Mill Garages have gone through wheel bearings, pads/discs, struts, ball joints and tyres. The noise is still there and they say they cannot think of anything else to check. Fortunately he had a used car warranty on this.
Everybody with this problem should pester Volvo until they come up with an answer.
Sorry about the dig but I only found out last week that radios no longer have valves, but some fancy gadget called a transistor. No idea what a podcast is.
Bill.

I was thinking the axle bearings too. Does it do it more when you turn your wheels a certain way or on acceleration more or on slowing down, etc. In other words does the noise ever change in different situations?
Another thing comes to mind...how many miles on your S60? It could be an axle that is going bad.

Hi
The car is a 2003 S60, and it has 60,000 miles on the clock.
The noise doesn't change when I turn the steering wheel, the only thing that alters it is the speed I'm travelling at. It starts at about 40mph and is there at all speeds I've been at above that.
It's frustrating that Volvo don't know the answer, it sounds like something that there should be a product recall on to me.

I thought I should come back and tell you what the problem was, just to put some closure on this thread!
It turned out that in my case, at least, it was a wheel bearing. I got it changed (had to be the main dealer unfortunately, nowhere else was able to do it) and the noise disappeared.
The cost of all this was about

Thanks for the update, Chris. It may well help someone in the future.
Pity you couldn't find an independent to do it as main dealer charges are ridiculous.
Bill.
