2002~2004 V40. Is this car a Mazda in Volvo clothing or is it just maybe the Mazda platform with Volvo mechanicals? The V40, how is it on gas? Premium needed or mid-grade be OK? Would 110K miles be considered a lot. The car I'm looking at had Volvo 100K service performed, TB etc. I own a 190K V70, my wife wants a Volvo and I am thinking of the V/S40 or maybe an S70. Is the V50 a V40 with a 5 cyl engine?
Thanks

The S/V40 cars were a project from Mitsubishi and Volvo. My V40 gets about 32 mpg on the highway. When driving on city streets, depending on how one drives, I've seen mpg in the teens to the 40s. The service manual recommends using 91 or higher. I have always run 93. The PCV system is likely going to need an overhaul if it hasn't had one already. It's a pretty nice car, but given the mileage, I imagine you'll have to get some repairs done in the near future. Just factor those repairs into the cost of the vehicle you're purchasing. I'm not knowledgable about the V50, but maybe somebody else will chime in.
