01 V70, will the servo, flush, and lower mount fix my tranny

Post by wadenepp »

I have found a wealth of information on this subject...seems like this problem is not going away. I will try not to be redundant, and ask if after reading the situation what type of chances you think I have of 'fixing' this with a flush/servo/tranny mount/valve body instead of putting in a new transmission, which really is not affordable for us and we'd have to scrap the car at a huge loss.

I purchased a 2001 Volvo V70 2.4T 4 days ago from a private party in Los Angeles. I drove it home to Utah, 10 hours drive and it drove great but I got a shift flare from 2-3. I did some research and found the fix for the B4 servo and lower transmission mount. They are both on order from IPD.

Today I drove it to Auto Zone to get some of that Mobil transmission fluid and:
1- check engine light comes on
2- displays transmission service urgent
3- engine revs out and won't go into all gears; I parked it and had it towed back to my house.

With all the expertise out here I'm hoping someone can tell me if it's even 'fixable' now, or if I should just send the parts back and take a huge bath on the purchase. Is the valve body rebuild even an option at this stage I'm in? I feel like I got screwed but at least it didn't break down in the middle of the desert on the 800 mile drive home. I'd REALLY like to get it fixed because I can't do a minivan and how many other 7 seaters get 25 mpg? Budget, however, is the main motivating issue until I can find a new job :-(

More important: THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!

PS: I also have a BULB POSITION LIGHT FAILURE code, along with a SERVICE ENGINE code, and the cruise control doesn't work. HA! Any fixes for these are greatly appreciated also!

Bulb position light only comes on when headlight switch is used. I'm not certain what this means yet.

I just replaced the throttle body with a good used one as the original was unservicable. You should start with the trans drain and fill & servo cover then adaptation through Vida. Clear codes then go from there.

Better to read error codes with DiCE or at least with generic OBD-II scanner.

Thanks for the replies! This is the first I've heard of the throttle body having anything to do with these symptoms/issue so I appreciate it and want to learn more about it. Any links on servicing it would be helpful. The only remedies I had heard of in the past were drain/fill, servo, lower tranny mount, and valve body ($$$!)

I've got the servo cover and lower tranny mount coming UPS today, will keep you updated on whether or not replacing these along with a drain/fill of the ATF works.

I wouldn't spend anymore money on this
When that "transmission service required" message comes up, it's almost always too late and you need a new tranny

The lack of cruise can be a throttle code.

My own XC70 '01 has no tranny codes at all but drives forward only; has fused friction plates according to one rebuilder that knows them well.

If codes indicate a solenoid issue speak to Cory at Reaman and see what he thinks about just a valve body replacement.

Have it read and post codes in

With all due respect to JRL's opinion, I would not make someone else happy by giving up that quickly :D

I say, let's read the TCM codes with VIDA and determine what triggered the "Transmission Service Required" message. This could be as simple as the fluid temp counter, which is resettable and recommended to do at fluid change.
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

OK, so today I got my B4 servo cover and lower tranny mount from IPD. I took of the servo cover, which is in no way a 30 minute job if you've never done it before, and it looked like new so I didn't replace it. I took a picture and wish I knew how to upload it.

I did replace the tranny mount, which is a 15 minute job.

I also drained and filled the ATF twice, it came out the first time looking bad; dark and crappy.

None of these things helped at all but I also got down to get the codes read and they were P0735 (something to do with gear 5) and P0740 (torque converter clutch, solenoid cicuit). These were read with a normal $400 OBDII unit.

I am so completely and totally confused. Aside from these two codes, it still says bulb failure position light, engine system service required, transmission service urgent. These display on the left side of dash. Any future insight?

You need to open a valve body and replace sticky solenoid (better all of them).

"bulb failure position light" - check all bulbs, it could be even bulb in trunk.
