Timing belt pulley install question

If the timing parts go while the car is running, the head is ruined.

I'm aware of how an interference engine works, hence the reason for changing out the pulley that is failing along with the tensioner while I'm in there.

Has anybody here had a dayco here that has failed on them? That they or their mechanic has installed.

You asked for thoughts, that's the one I had. :)

Your post made it seem like you actually weren't considering how an interference engine works. Not that you didn't know, just that you weren't fully considering it. Where you speculated that the parts should last 40-50k: for me, that settles the discussion. It's not like you just have to replace the parts again but earlier than you planned - if they don't last, you'll be throwing away the engine. For most that means throwing away the car.

I also understand you want to hear from Dayco users, but I doubt you will hear enough to provide any useful information. I can tell you this: if you search all of the online forums, you can find several posts about failed aftermarket timing parts. Not dozens, but some. So it's not like every cheaply made pulley fails right out of the box. They may fail early, they may fail late, and I speculate that they most commonly don't fail at all. It's a numbers game (take a chance with the cheaper parts, or be sure with the quality ones), so you can't actually know the numbers without hearing from minimum twenty or so users. To be practical, it's more about deciding if you want to take the chance. As long as you are OK with rolling the dice, doing so with Dayco should not be a bad way to go.

Maybe this cuts to the chase on my thoughts: you're replacing a pulley you are unsure about. Why replace it with a pulley you are unsure about?

Mail order the kit from Volvo for $120 and ask your son to come back next weekend, then you get to spend more time with him anyway!

Well my thought process was the car will see about 8-10k a year while my daughter is at school, locally she will put a max of 40k over the next four.. at that point the car I bought her for a grand is still only worth a grand if its kept in condition.

I have used dayco twice on my boys jetta, both never failed but I prefer to change the belts at 60k verses the 70k recommended to be proactive.

I have seen others concerns on the forums on the net and I am not discounting a large problem they had with Gm / Saturns.

I wasn't sure if that was something that was prevalent in their Volvo aftermarket product line.

I will more than likely use the dayco for this weekend. Risk maybe? but its calculated. I also did inspect the pulley based on a noise I was hearing and it is failing. Visible debris

I'll let you know how long it lasts or if it blows up on me.

Dayco, Goodyear and Gates make a living making belts and they don't put out junk. Or if they do it's their "no name" line for people who think a belt should be dirt cheap. People use them daily and if they fail it's almost always either installer error or a component failure that took out the belt as a secondary problem.

While you're in there you should really consider doing the water pump. If it goes, well you already know :o

I have used Dayco belts with no problem whatsoever. It usually isn't the belt itself that will get you, it is the other stuff like the tensioner or the water pump. I have been buying the blue box belts lately since they come with the official "Byte Exchange" sticker. The paper stickers that come with other belts only last for a few months.

OP is not asking about belts, but about tensioner and roller.

+1 on Dayco belts, I'll use 'em too.

Well, it took about an hour and the one thing I did find interesting was what I think was the the original tensioner and pulley were still in use at 195k....

Second observation was that the replacement parts from dayco were in fact OEM INA parts down to the same numbers on the bearings. The only difference was Volvo stamp on the back of the replaced parts.

But its fixed there are no more noises and the grill is lit.

Thanks for every bodies tips, the site always helps me out when I have question, even if its only by using the search button.
