My 2002 C70 makes loud groaning and creaking noises when turning the wheels to near the end of the steering limits, like when you are in a parking lot. Does anyone know what I should check or replace first.
Thanks

Look at front of lower control arms, your contact pads may have broken and fallen off. You will notice it by seeing a pair of rivets with the spot between marred by the spindle contact bar wearing the control where pad should be. Harmless but noisy.

That part of the control arm where there should be a plastic rub point is the little bulge just below the ball joint on the right in the picture. A little grease will usually take care of a noise you'd get when turned all the way left or right.

If that doesn't solve it, worn out tie rods made a nice loud "pop" when I approached the limits.

Just another noise making option to consider, the spring seats made a creaking sort of noise on mine when they were bad.
The steel sleve was staying in place while the seat was turning around it. Not so much a "groaning", but a creaking.

Creaking is probable a better word to describe the noise. The noise will happen even when sitting still and i just crank the wheel all the way to the left.

Yeah, that sounds like a spring seat, or both.
I want to add that my '93 control arms are the aluminum ones with a different bump stop, but I have heard what sounds like a groan when maximum travel is reached, i. e. a tight slow turn into a parking space.

Here is an old thread that explains the bump stop noise with the remedy.
