Two questions about the ECC in the 2001 s40: Where is the cabin temperature sensor located? My owners manual shows slots (grill) in the ECC panel between the Air Distribution dial and the Temperature dial, but the panel in the car does not have any slots.
Question #2: The Temperature dial does not seem to work properly; to get heat the dial must be turned to 'MAX' and to get cold the dial must be turned all the way down to '0'. Other then that everything works fine - great car at 170,000 miles. Help!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
The cabin temperature sensor, according to VADIS, is mounted behind the grille in the control panel. The bad news is that it can't be replaced separately. I have attached the relevant pages:

I have just taken my s40's climate control out to check it for intermittent connections. My problem was: fan speed changing all of the time and a clicking sound from under the dash. if you pressed on the knobs, of the CC, the symptoms would change. I have taken pictures to show what I did to remove the unit.
Step 1 know the code for your radio. When you disconnect power it will think it has been stolen and go into lock mode.
Step 2 pull the three knobs off of the face plate; fan, temp, selector. They snap off, they are not shaft mounted but snap to the edge of the knob. I set the positions to all left, except the selector it just spins, before I removed them, however the selector is easy to reset. With the AC off rotate the selector until the AC comes on, this is the defroster. Now you know where to position this knob.
Step 3 with a small screwdriver lift the edge of the of the control panel, the knobs and friction held it on. Work it from both sides and it will come off reveling 4 screws. Remove the bottom 2 and the one below (would be under the radio.)
Step 4 remove this piece of plastic trim. Yours may or may not have the information know on this piece. When it get the trim half way out, you can see the cable and disconnect it.
Step 5 place your hand under the CC (white plastic) and loosen/remove the 2 remaining screws just under the vents. The CC has to slide to the front of the car to get by the guide pins. Turn it around in the dash and disconnect the harness and plastic hose.
Once out the disassembly is straight forward. 4 screws in the back of the CC and 2 in the board. Look closely for bad solder joints and repair if you have the skill. I suspect that just a re-seat of the harness might fix many problems.
I am still not sure about the clicking sound. It sounded like a large piece of plastic snapping against another under spring pressure. Upon partial re-assembly you can start your car and operate the controls and watch the temperature motor do its thing. It is the black box with a white grommet and a small metal rod connected to a plastic arm. To see it imagine the radio is installed and you are trying to look through it from a regular driving position. The unit will be kind of down behind the radio. With a white triangle shaped bracket. My car is a 2002

Thank you so much for your posting. It sure was a great help for me because i also had to replace mine. Your pictures helped a lot. Now I have to replace the bulbes in the CCm and in the headlight switch assembly and those little buggers are very expensive.

Just replaced my CCM and the resistor, actually had done this one first, and I managed to remove it without disconnecting the battery or pulling out the radio. I must confess that pulling out the radio makes one's job much easier, but it also avoids the check engine light to come up like it did on my first attempt when I followed Fromhold's instructions which by the way are so great thank you. One just has to be a little patient and wiggle the CCM out from it's place. Unscrew the four screws, push it in a little, turn it sideways, unplug the hose and wires and wiggle it out carefully. It will take a little time because you'll also have to pry the trim a little. And here is the website where a bought my replacement CCM http://www.vandsautodismantlers.com/ bought it used with a two year warranty for $188.00 . This includes shipping and the warranty. The part was $125.00. Volvo dealer wants almost $700.00. It works great.
