The collant tank cap on my 2002 s60 exploded today. What might cause this to happen. Car has been running great for years.
I plan to just replace it but should I be concerned that something is wrong with my engine or collant system?

If it just cracked and broke after years of use then you can just replace it. If the system pressure was higher than normal due to overheating or a failed head gasket you would have to fix those issues as well as replacing the cap.
If the coolant is still clean then try the cap first. If you see oil or anything other than clean coolant you may want to check for hydro carbons in the coolant as well as any oil from a failed oil cooler.
Overall it is rare for them to break into pieces. They can and do fail and spray coolant .
