I recently purchased a 2001 S60 (27K miles on it) from a relative and am trying to get feel for what is normal for this car.
When the car has been sitting overnight or for several hours, I hear a strange clunk/grind sound from the rear end of the car each time I start the car, back out of a parking space, and begin to move forward. It happens only once and occurs after I

When you leave the car do you set the parking brake and is it damp where you park? It sounds like it could be a combination of the parking brake being slow to come off with a light covering of rust on the brake drum. That would account for the grinding noise disappearing after a short time.

Thanks for the info, but I never use the parking brake and generally park in dry areas.
Just to clarify, the clunk is very brief and metallic sounding, maybe a second at most. Just one loud clank, then I go on my way and all is fine until I park it for a several hours again.

For you, probably torqing and tightening of the subframe bushings will help.S60dad wrote:Mine does the same thing! Every time, but only once in the morning when I leave for my commute to Toronto I hear this clunk from the front.
Very strange.
I had the same clunk in the morning (04R) and a COMPLETE torquing of EVERY NUT AND BOLT possible made mine as quiet as the day it came out of the factory.
All my chassis, suspension and motor mount nuts and bolts were retorqued
My clunk comes from just behind and below the center arm rest. I have come to beleive it is a bushing ( about 2" in dia and 3" tall) for the drive shaft support bracket. I just bought one at the dealership for $35 bucks because the part number did not come up on any websites. I will post a reply as to it sloving the clunk or not.
I experienced the same thing with my 01xc70, and 4 months prior I had new brakes/pads installed by Volvo... they checked the suspension and detemined the "clunk" sound was not deriving from that area, but they still "retorqued the suspension."
However they lubed the front brake pads "due to you can hear them shift in the caliper... brakes are new and no problem with brakes, either..."
After that work on 04/05/07, I have not heard the sound since.
