Wonky Blower/Resistor Issue...

Post by gigemlee »

Hello all, longtime lurker, first time poster. I have a 99 V70 XC, and due to the A/C shutoff problem, should have lurked here first to see the breadclip solution.. Instead, because of the musty smell, I sprayed some AC system cleaner into the HVAC intake, and some into the interior vents. Found quickly that my blower stopped working. Thought I had blown out the blower, until while driving around town with the windows down, it switched back on, but at full blast and I couldn't control the speed or direction (face, feet, defrost). At that point, it was all or nothing. Sometimes, it would not come on at all. Sometimes it was full blast for a few seconds, sometimes full blast from ignition to stop. FIgured it was the blower motor resistor. Replaced this morning, but the same problem persists. The four lights on the dash for cirulate, oustide air, ac on and ac off sometimes will light up but sometimes not. The fan will come on full blast, but cannot control speed. Tried blowing compressed air into the sensor vent on the right of the tree, but no change. What should the next step be? The contacts to the blower are tight and seem to be good. What could that AC system cleaner have done? Any ideas?

I can only speak for the 850 model, but when the system went wacky on my old '93, it was the control box (with the 3 dials) in the dash. I'd try a pull from the boneyard or a cheap one (with a warranty) off of ebay. On the 850, it just pries out of the dash (like the dash switches) and you unplug the wires. TOO simple. The fix SHOULD be the same for your newer series, but someone else here knows better than I do on that. Also, did you replace that resistor with the exact same model? I've read that the system doesn't like having the wrong resistor in it. Just my 2 cents.

Turns out that's exactly what I did. 27 bucks shipped on eBay. Works perfectly!
