Re: oil trap

I took off the flame trap and hose assembly and the flame trap was pretty clogged up. I cleaned it up with brake cleaner.

While I had it off I put a hose on top as you suggested. There was little resistance when I blew into it.

But there was no difference in the resistance with or without the oil filler cap on or off. Should that matter?

The "symptoms" I notice are rough idle and oil leaking around the front camshaft and the oil pan seal.

I just bought the car-- 7 psgr. wagon-- for $600 (!). It has 268K miles on it. But it runs and drives fine!

I think U-joints are next. I'm reading up on that around the forum. The car makes a rubbing noise when you step on the gas are go up hill. Normal noise when coasting or maintaining speed.

No longer leaks oil and idles much more smoothly. Now about those u-joints....

I would replace the motor mounts before U joints. At 437K miles, U joints were fine, 3rd set of motor mounts.

Ooops. To late already did the ujoints! I'll take a look at the motor mounts. My center bearing had lot of play in it and turned rough, so I just went ahead and did the ujoints while I had it out.

But now... I have a different noise coming from the drive train all the time. A muffled clicking noise, sort of like when you put a card in bicycle spokes back in the day. Gotta look under there again. Maybe i assembled something wrong. I did mark all the components to be sure I aligned them back they way they originally were.

I'll look at the motor mounts while I'm under there.

I gave up and took it to the mechanic who had pressed the ujoints and center bearing on. He said it looks like I got sold a bad center bearing. I grabbed another, which the parts place said was from a better manufacturer; we shall see. Since the mechanic already had the car, I asked him to go ahead and drop the driveshaft himself and install it. Pressing on.

Kirby J nailed it. Motor/Transmission mount was shot. I replaced it today and it is a much more civilized-sounding little beastie. Still gonna do the differential fluid. (Oh, and the clicking noise referenced above was a bad center-bearing... the new one.... right outa the box. Not my happiest experience in parts-buying, but they took it back and exchanged it for a more durable brand.)
