Has my Purge Valve Failed?

Post by SwampRat5605 »

Yesterday when I was replacing my vacuum hoses, I attached a 12V source to the purge valve connections to test to see if it's still functioning correctly. When the 12V was applied, the valve would make a ticking sound as if it were opening/closing, but there appeared to be nothing happening when I looked through the valve. So my question is, when I apply the 12V source to the valve, should I be able to see the valve actually opening and closing? If so, then I'll need to get a new purge valve.

Yes,

That was exactly my problem. I replaced it with PN 0 280 142 300, $40 on ebay.

Maybe try blowing through it whilst you apply 12 VDC to test the valve function

Rinse mouth with beer afterwards. Test multiple times to be sure

I had a failed purge valve and took it apart to see if I could fix it up:

I also took a little video clip of the solenoid being actuated (first part of clip) and then of the valve being tested (second part of clip):

Before I took it apart and cleaned it out, it would pass air even when not actuated. The valve definitely controls the flow of air now.
