I had a Volvo dream...

Post by matthew1 »

I was warning my dad that carbon deposits which undoubtedly reside in his '99 S80 T6's engine would one day become dislodged and cause valve damage.

This dream happened last night.

Keeping the revs low all the time, not letting an engine warm up (short trips), bad gasoline, clogged PCV...

You have to drive like a grandma -- like my dad -- forever, once you start.

I would never run his car hard, now. One full throttle run up to 80mph would make me cringe. I would start looking for a tow truck phone number before we hit 60mph.

Sneak a can of Berryman Chemtool B-12 ($4) liquid into his full gas tank once or twice a year. Its the cheapest way I know to make the deposits disappear.

Seems to be a common problem with early direct-injection engines too. Some engines are losing performance like crazy and require an expensive disassembly carbon-cleaning to restore lost performance/fuel economy.

Strangely, though BMW, Audi, and Mercedes can't seem to do it right...Ford, Hyundai, and GM's V6's seem to have gotten it right. The ones you would least, expect, right?

Honda's new DI 2.4 is a thing of beauty. One of the best-driving 4-cylinders I've ever driven. Stupid name though..."Earth dreams". Pff.
