I have an '87 240 DL wagon that has been running cold for several weeks. The gauge will climb to normal, and then drop fairly suddenly. Then it climbs slowly back to the middle. It does this especcially when climbing hills, or starting up from an idle.
I changed the thermostat over Thanksgiving weekend (and the water pump, which had a very minor leak). The coolant mixture is now somewhat higher than 50/50. The following week, the gauge stopped working all together. The Volvo dealership in Santa Fe, NM first told me the gauge had gone out, but after further investigation, decided the temperature sensor was bad, and they replaced it yesterday (12/8/03). However, the gauge continues to fluctuate in the manner described. Is this related to the coolant/water ratio, the automatic transmission cooler (as cooler temps occur in lower gears), or something else? Any help is appreciated.
240 DL - running cold
Is the needle dropping out entirely suggesting a complete loss of signal? I bet it's the gauge, sensor or wiring in between. Try this test (this is straight out of the manual so if you've already done it sorry) remove the wire from the coolant temperature sensor on the side of the cylinder head and temporarily connect it to ground. turn the ignition on and check that the gauge needle moves to the top of the gauge, if not, the wiring to the gauge or the gauge itself is faulty. If the gauge operates correctly when the wire is grounded, the sensosr is most likely faulty. good luck
