SRS reset

Post by 240GL »

Hi

Can anyone help me to reset the SRS light on my 1996 T-5 850? I have tried the OBDII but nothing happens. I believe that this does nothing except reset the service light but the controller is in the bonnet like the old 240. Please help if you can.

Thanks

Rick :D

The only way I know to reset it is to use a VAG-COM cable (like https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002WIN8VQ, other sources all over amazon/ebay) with VOL-FCR (http://www.ilexa.co.uk/diagnostic-tools/vol-fcr.html) -- That is, aside from paying a shop/dealer to do it.

Some expensive "pro" automotive scan tools may do it to, as well as the OEM "Volvo Scan Tool", of course.

If you're a regular at your local independent Volvo shop, you might mention it next time you drop your car off for billable services. Assuming they have a suitable tool, it's just a few minutes work and most shops will do little trivial favors to keep their customers happy...

The SRS controller on 96/97 850's is a separate controller, it has a K-line interface (ISO9141) but a generic scan tool won't talk to it.

Trivial - yeah. My stealer charged me $80 to reset it. I explained to them I accidentally unplugged the passenger airbag when fixing the squeaky dash but they still gave me the smug, arrogant "we need to perform an in-depth analysis whenever the SRS is tripped." comment. They must be used to the local soccer moms, chatting on their cell phones and dropping off their cars.

SRS... Because if the crash isn't bad enough, we'll blow up a bag full of gunpowder in your face

Some mid-grade scanners can reset the SRS. I have one of those, Autel EU702. It can read and clear ABS, SRS, engine, and trans codes.

I was curious about the availability on that scanner so I checked, it is still all over the place. I paid $150 for it a year or so ago from Amazon, it looks like right now you'd have to import it via eBay for about the same cost.

That sounds like the best deal yet on a scanner that does more than generic FI scans. Nice!

If you want a eu702 and don't want to pay goofy prices or wait, just get a us703 and put the european files on it... All of the autel eu/us/jp/fr units are the exact same, only the files on them are different.

I've used my eu702 hundreds of times and have even left it on the roof of the car to fall off down the street. It's a pretty durable unit.

+1 on the Autel. If your car model and year is covered, it's great. It does ECM, TCM, ABS and SRS. I just used it yesterday to reset my daughter's TCM to get rid of the dreaded blinking up arrow.

FYI - I just checked my US703 that has the Volvo.zip file loaded in it and the 850 is not listed at all. It only goes back to a '98 V70. The VAG cable will probably reset it though, and that is really cheap on eBay.

But more FYI - I have used those files to retrieve and clear TCM, SRS and ECM codes from my 850s (95 and 96). I use the S70 setting. Matty Moo gave me instructions a while back.
