First off, I searched the forums first assuming this is somewhat common but couldn't find anything.
There is red transmission fluid coming dampening the seam that runs straight down from the dipstick housing... it is a pretty major seam. It may be the bell housing between the engine and transmission, but I'm not entirely sure. It is a large seam though.
I can't tell if it is coming out of the top of the dipstick housing, so I replaced the seal at the bottom of the dipstick housing and it doesn't seem to have made a difference.
I'm putting a cup underneath tonight to gauge just how much I'm losing.
Only real symptom is a noise and a shaking, much like a suspension problem, between 45 and 50 MPH... doesn't seem like it matters which gear.
I feel and hear it when I'm on the gas, but if I'm coasting between 45 and 50, it doesn't seem to give me any trouble.
1) Do you suspect the leak and the noise and shake are related?
2) Is there any seal in that area of the transmission that can be replaced without dropping the transmission and taking on 8 hours of labor?
Thanks for your input
Transmission Leak - Dripping!
Got the car up on a lift yesterday and was finally able to track down the source without a doubt!
The cooler line that goes in at the front of the transmission... it is all seeping from that point.
I don't know if there is an O-ring or what kind of sealant holds it together, but I need to determine now the best way to pull that line and then reseal it... or replace the O-ring... or whatever...
Any guesses on that one?

Yes there is an O-ring on both sides: trans side and radiator side.
See this DIY by jreed for 1998 model. Yours is 1999, probably very similar.
I am doing a DIY (rebuilding the cooler hose) today, stay tuned for the DIY.

I don't know if this would be of much help. But i recently, replaced the C/V axles )(both side) on my non-turbo 850, . Although i used parts from FCP, my drivers side shaft would not completely seat, and i notice the car was shifting a little rough and loosing fluid pretty fast. Well, i finally took it to the Volvo specialist and told him the issues, and he called me a two hour later and said the SEAL ON THE TRANNY WERE LEAKING , due to the shaft of the c/v axle not properly seating . I asked how is that possible and his reply was , well i replaced the seal and ,put a used c/v jiont on the car it button right up and NO LEAKS FOUND. So , i called FCP and relayed all this and sent my c/v axle back and they replaced the product.
All this said check around your c/v axles .
