My 98 S70 does this as well. Figured it was an expansion / contraction thing as temperature extremes are when it shows up.

I read somewhere to check the 4 bolts under the intake cowling, that attach the dash? Mine has the same noise........ 1999 X/C will post if mine are loose.

Sounds like the dashboard cracking from being too loose. Mine did that and it's because the dash bolts between the windshield and firewall are loose and need to be tightened. it's a big job. I have yet to get to mine so I just used a rubber tie-down to keep it from squeeking and cracking until I fix it. Gluck with your issue and let us know the results of your findings.

those bolts are loose because the plastic on one side or the other (or both) of the plastic strap where the panel nut the bolts threads into.

A bitter cold morning, started the heater, turned the knob to direct air to the windshield. After few minutes the snap startled me.

The crack, see picture, became visible when it got warmer inside the cabin. It is a hairline when cold, you won't see it.

Yup...I've got this issue too. First time I remember it happening, I noticed the plastic had split around the alarm sensor.
