first post, weird noise from engine bay v40, t4, 2001

Post by jazmi »

hello everybody,
this is my first post on this forum.
I'm from croatia and I own 2001. volvo v40 t4.
besides other problems I now have a new annoying one.

since changing two lower (front and rear) engine mounts the car makes weird noise when accelerating hard. I've recorded the noise on this video

(seconds 1-3 of video) simmilar noise is heard when accelerating softly over bumps
since then I have changed the right engine mount/anchor (one next to timing belt) but nothing changed, the noise is still there.
lower engine mounts were changed by a competent mechanic and the new ones are original, checked their part numbers in vadis and they are ok.

can anyone diagnose where is it from?

thanks in advance for any help.

I cant give you any advice on where its from, but it sounds similar to a rub noise mine makes when coasting and turning at the same time

What do you mean by coasting? In my case it doesn't make any noise while just driving, fast or slow, it has something to do with accelerating.

I'm thinking it could be exhaust related (touching something because of moving of the engine while accelerating) because I heard similar noise when I hit some snow on the road with exhaust. But, I'm wondering why the noise started after replacing both lower mounts. Also, checking exhaust pipes gave no clues as it all seems perfect.
It is really annoying because I can't accelerate normally without hearing it, and in reality it sounds much worse than on the video. It happens in first, second, and, if I push really hard, third gear. Could it be the engine mount on transmission? It is pretty expensive here so I would like to be sure before replacing it.

To me that noise on your video sounds like possibly a vibrating heat shield. Perhaps the exhaust manifold or turbo heat shields behind the engine to protect the firewall area ???
May have been disturbed slightly when fitting mounts and less clearance than previously ?
