I'm pretty certain this is for an 850 or V70/S70 judging by the pic attached. This may equally apply to P2 series cars or the '99 plus Gen 1s if the hose construction is similar.

It is 1997 '850 NA.
Discovered the leak at the UPPER line while diagnosing the anti-freeze fluid loss. Both UPPER and LOWER lines have new o-rings and retaining clips which was replaced during the radiator, thermostat, and hoses replacement about a year ago.

The two Volvo trans cooler lines from DW arrived today. It includes the retainer clip and and o-rings.
Inlet line PN 9180542, and outlet PN3507931.

The tranny fluid close to 10 quarts of MOBIL AFT 3309 was replaced using Simple D&F procedure 18 months ago. It was completed during a period of two month, 3-cycles.

Reading cn90's instructions i would drain the fluid from the plug, install the two hoses, and refill with adequate quantity.

I chose MOBIL ATF 3309 over TOYOTA-IV at the time of Simple D&F. Now the question is should I continue using MOBIL ATF 3309 or flush using MadeInJapan method, and switch to DEX-III spec fluid like Valvoline MaxLife ATF or likes?

JRL commented on the topic "ATF Recommendation" which said MOBIL 1 ATF does not meet Volvo specification.

I was surprised to find while doing this job that very little ATF drained out. I didn't need to add more than about 100mL / 4oz of fluid at the end of the job.

The JWS 3309 spec Mobil 3309 is ONLY for the 5 speed AW55-50SN & AW55-51SN gearboxes as fitted to some '99 NA V70/S70s and all 2000 NA V70/S70s as well as all P2 series 5 cylinder cars.

You are perfectly fine with Valvoline Dex III or Castrol Dex III for the 4 speed AW50-42. Mobil 1 ATF doesn't meet the JWS 3309 spec required by the newer 5 speeds only. It does however meet and exceed Dex II and Dex III specification.

Mobil 3309 is not meant to be used with 4 speed Volvo transmissions:

I would dump the 3309 and just run any generic Dex III with regular fluid changes.

Local Wal-Mart has a gallon for $15. The label reads as follows. It lists Volvo, see 2nd bullet from the bottom. Can I do this fearlessly?

I think my advice has not been so good in this thread, answering too short to make myself clear so I'll try again.

You can use 3309 if you want. Some people even prefer it over standard Dex III. 3309 isn't going to cause any problems, and if your car has hard shifting it is reported to help with that and actually recommended by Volvo in that situation (e.g. http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/11 ... obil-1-atf).

However if you are going to flush your trans fluid anyway now, that's where I would dump the 3309 and go with standard Dex III. Mostly because it is cheaper and works very well. The MaxLife you showed will work, but I would actually go with the SuperTech brand at WalMart, which is like $12 a gallon.

But if you don't want to flush out the trans now, then continuing to use 3309 is fine.

Interesting thread Erik. Thanks for posting that up about Mobil 3309 helping some AW50-42 problems.

Valvoline MaxLife has me a little stumped. It's a fully synthetic fluid meeting Toyota T-IV standard yet it makes no mention of the JWS-3309 spec. In literature provided by Valvoline this is also confirmed:

I think I'll keep on sticking with the Nulon Synthetic Multi Vehicle fluid. It's synthetic and meets ALL specs
