outer CV removal - where is the circlip?

Post by erikv11 »

The CV tutorials all talk about a circlip that has to be released to remove the outer CV joint.

I'll go take a closer look in a bit when I go back to it but I didn't see a circlip with the axle mounted on the vise - can somebody help me find it? I am wondering if this axle has one or not (factory axle, 96 850).

The circlip is within the joint sat within a recess in the splines the CV joint is sat on and isn't something you have to release to pull the joint from the shaft, it will release when you give the joint a good pull/ tug as it is more like a sprung wire clip rather than a true circlip, there is no access to use circlip pliers - With a decent pull to the CV joint it should release the joint from the shaft - Mike

Thanks for the reply.

So if I tap on one of those 5 star-shaped arms with a drift, the joint should slide off the end of the axle shaft?

Yup, block of wood to cushion the blow and it will pop right off the drive shaft - Mike

I'm preparing for my driver's side cv boot and passenger's side cv joint replacement.
Here is a great write-up from cn90:

You won't get it off by mounting it horizontally. If you do you'll likely have to hit it so hard you'll damage the outer casing. The clip is there, just spin the CV around and you'll see it in a recess cut out for access to it.

I learned this the hard way. There's a video on YouTube on how to remove it and it involves. holding it horizontally so the clip will centre within the recess. If you mount it vertically the clip falls to one side because of gravity and doesn't allow the clip to close as you hit.

So the procedure is hit-spin, hit-spin while using the largest hammer you can swing (no wooden block which will weaken the blow)

From the size of the guy in the video I could see that I would be at a disadvantage because

a) The force of the blows he was using would probably dislocate my shoulder

b) I don't have his (huge) hammer

c) I don't have his mass

The last time I attempted a CV removal I removed the balls and outer cage, then ground the CV off which was a painful exercise. No amount of clip pushing/manipulating would pry it off. I then used my OEM outer cage with the aftermarket inner CV. That combination lasted 3 years until the aftermarket boot split again aaaaargh!!

I also used that a great write-up but that pic for the outer CV circlip is nearly useless, just sort of points to a black hole :D, that is why I was asking.

Thanks all, job is all done, axle back in ran the vehicle etc. I will post a follow-up in a bit with nice pics of the circlip, maybe add those to cn90's DIY thread too.

I'll wait for that follow-up because my cv joints are also still factory ones.

To remove this circlip you actually need three hands. The best way is to hold the axles vertically in the wise (first hand), use special tool (use your imagination) to spread "ears" on circlip (if you zoom in on CN90 picture you will see two "ears" with small holes). While the second hand is spreading the "ears", your third hand is hitting "5 star-shaped arms". You do not need a lot of force ($10 air hammer from Harbor does very good job, but you need compressor)

Are you just changing the boots? You can do the outer by removing the inner joint (No tools needed, just slides off) and sliding the outer boot on down the entire length of the shaft.
