Upgrade to S80 speakers?

Post by Jicafold »

Posted in the wrong forum earlier.

So if I have a 1998 V70 with the 6.5 inch front door speakers...you know, the paper tan colored ones, is there any sense in replacing them with the black and apparently better quality, S80 speakers (see photo). They are 8 ohm speakers in the S80

If you're pulling from a junk yard, I'd try speakers from rear doors from S/V70s first. They seem to be 2-ways with a tweeter rather than a cone. You'll have to install them with the frames from your existing speakers.

Thanks, but I'm way ahead of you. The rear door speakers from the same S80 were 2 ways with the tweeters. So I have two of each kind. Plus I have 2 separate dome tweeters. Now I just need 2 more tweeters I suppose and I'll have a full set. I cut up one mounting plate already to adapt to the new speaker. Same for the tweeter. Here are photos of one woofer and one tweeter installed so far.

Please keep us updated on the swap, as far as sound quality difference! I saw a set of front S80 this past weekend at my local yard and thought the same thing as you! I'll be installing them with the factory head unit and probably go aftermarket later.

Well, I'm not overly happy. They are a bit quiet due to the change from 4 ohms to 8 ohms.

Crazyyy...if you already have these speakers though, I doubt you could do much better with an aftermarket setup.

Are you running a factory stereo or aftermaket stereo? I'll be pushing these with my factory radio for a while. I don't see myself spending a lot of money on aftermarket speakers, these may be a less expensive alternative.

I was running a factory stereo with them for a few weeks, then put in a Sony. Same difference though. It's not bad, maybe I'm being too critical. One of my other speakers was shot so this is definetaly better.
Are you prepared to cut up your old mounting brackets and etc to do this? It's not hard, but it is something that needs to be done to get them to fit like in the above photo.
