02 V70XC Right Front Axle Shaft Carrier Bearing DIY?

My RF axle shaft (4 in the attached diagram) is still a very good one. The only problem is the carrier bear making a little noise when it turns. The axle is still functioning very well. It is a Volvo OE part. Both boots are in very good shape and no play on any other parts. I would like to replace the carrier bearing if I could. I know people may tell me to buy a replacement axle and there few cheap ones out there. However, I prefer to repair this one if I could. I prefer to stay away from the aftermarket axle if I could help it. I have read many negative posts about them on several forums.

Searching on the net, this bearing is no where can be found. I went to my local dealer, they told me they don't sell the bearing separately and I have to buy the whole axle at $600. They don't know the part number nor do they know anything about the specs of this bearing. I called Raxles and talked to Marty about rebuilding my axle or buy a rebuild from him. He told me he doesn't do anything newer than 1998.

Does anyone have information on this bearing? On the bearing, I can tell it was made in Poland. Here are the numbers on the bearing: 114-879BTNG2KS350. I hope I can get the information on the specs. If someone knows where to buy this bear that will be great. Thanks

How did you come to the conclusion that this bearing is bad? I don't see how this bearing could make noise during turning.

Sorry, when I said turning, I didn't mean the car was turning. Currently this axle is off the car, when I turned the bearing by hand, it makes some small noise.

I'd also like to replace only the center bearing and had these thoughts:
A) buy a cheap aftermarket axle, and scavenge the bearing for use on the old axle. Use the rest of the aftermarket axle as a baseball bat or some other purpose as it's not fit for use in a car!
B) measure the bearing dimensions and seek an equivalent from an industrial supply house. I've done this before for manual transmission bearings and other hard-to-find parts.
C) buy a used axle with low miles from a junkyard. The center bearing does have a finite life, and is the achilles heel of the RH axle. The CV joint basically has infinite life as long as the boots keep the grease in and contaminants out. Thus, a used low mile RH axle should be a good investment.

If I can find a shop to press the center bearing I think I'll explore option B further...

FCP Euro.com has the R/F carrier bearing oem for under 200 which is cheaper than 600.

I replaced the bearing with the quality one, closest size from the standard nomenclature. It's depth was smaller, but it works well. Easily done with cheap 12 tons press from Harbor Freight. Don't remember the price for the bearing, but it was cheap compared to $$ mentioned above.

@vtl and @swimNdrive, I am facing this same repair soon on my '05 V70R with the front right CV axle carrier bearing.

There is a Febest version of this 45x75x19 bearing that seems more available nowadays, so I would likely purchase that. I have a 20 ton Harbor Freight press available to use, so I'm curious how the new bearing was pressed in? I like the suggestion of heating the new bearing in the oven first, too.

Just greased it a bit, and that's it: it went right in.

Thanks for the picture! That makes sense.

This will make the 2nd use of my press for a repair since I picked it up about a month-and-a-half ago. The first use was to press in new front lower control arm bushings for my 350Z

You will probably need to regrease the tripod joint. It needs a special grease, VW G052186A3 would do it.
