Hey all,
I think that my shifter cables are done for.
My car has issues going into 2nd, 4th, and reverse. From my research, and from a gut feeling, I've conlcuded that my shifter cables have worn out.
My questions to you are:
Is it possible to buy new cables for less than a small fortune? The dealership wants $200 for a set...
Will cables from the 1998-2000 70 Series vehicles work with my car?
What tools are required to remove the cables? I'll be able to remove the center console and shifter without a problem.
Does anyone have cables for sale? I can't seem to find anything around the Johnstown, PA area (or all of SW PA for that matter).
Is it possible for me to make my own cables? If so, where can I get measurements for the cables (besides pulling my own out)?
Also, here's the forum post (from VS) that supports my conclusion of bad shifter cables. I am having exactly the same problems this person had. 2nd, 4th, and reverse all went out at the same time on Saturday morning.
One more thing to add is that I installed that short-shift kit from Snabb, and I believe that the extra force from shifting ruined the cables.
If there's a forum post about this, please direct me to it.
Thanks!

I will try to look up the cable part numbers and figure out what is compatible in terms of years and models. Based on your description though I'm not so sure it is actually a cable problem. Reverse is a completely different cable.
The ball at the base of the shifter might be broken in your case.

There's only two cables - one for the left and right motion of the shifter, and one for the up and down motion of the shifter.
I did take apart the entire center console and shifter assembly and found that it looks to be in good shape.
Which ball are you talking about? The large, black ball that acts as the pivot point of the shifter, or the ball at the very bottom of the assembly that goes into the socket of the cable?
Also, it seems that I forgot to include the link of the VS forum post that I am referencing.

I just installed the short-shift kit from Snabb, and wouldn't you know it, I also lost the bottom half of my shift pattern (2d, 4th, & R). I believe the problem is directly related to the design of the Snabb product, and I intend to discuss it with them.
The cable that mounts to the Snabb bracket is the one that is actuated by the fore-aft movement of the shift lever (i.e., it selects the "upper" or "lower" half of the shift pattern). It is forced to bend to the left as it exits its retaining bracket on the gearbox housing (just a few inches aft from the Snabb bracket where this cable terminates). At this end, the cable has two rubber boots held in place by single-use clamps. These clamps dictate how far the cable can move in and out of its housing because the cable has a little ridge that cannot pass through the reduced diameter of the clamp. When the clamp is not in place, however, the cable can extrend too far forward, and the portion with the ridge can fully leave the cable housing/rubber boot. When this happens, it is highly unlikely that it will go back in on its own, due to the bending force exerted by the position of the Snabb bracket. Thus, you can operate the gearshift mechanism in the upper half of its range, but you cannot return to any of the gears in the lower half.
Theoretically, this problem could be resolved by replacing the stretched ring clamp on the cable housing, although I haven't had any luck in my attempts using circlips, wire, or zip ties. I do not have the time to remove my car from service long enough to remove/replace the whole cable, so I am stuck driving only in 1, 3, & 5 for now.

Most likely u probably installed the bracket the wrong way or the mount that secures the cables to the top of the tranny is bad but I installed brand new cables and the shift kit by snabb and haven't had any problems with the shift the big problem was trying to run the new cables back to the tranny th correct way that was the only thing I had a prob with
had the same issue with my s40 last night...go to shift from 3rd to 4th and nothing happened....shifter will only move forward and backwards and trans is stuck in 3rd gear because i cant move the shifter
