hi guys
I am familiar with the earlier P1 cars and have driven and worked on a 2000 xc, but my son is looking at a 2002 v70xc with 101k on it
aside from pcv and possible timing belt
what are the issues to watch for on these cars, main problems, things to listen for or feel for when driving
son looking at a 2002 v70xc

A P1 is a 2004 to current, S40-V50
Early cars are either P80s or called Gen 1s
Do NOT buy a 2002 (or an 01).
Buy 03 or newer

true on car identification, im bad
anyway thanks for the info....and since I don't like the 2000 models with the stupid Mirelli- throttle body piece of junk, and some denso parts that cost nearly double ( if oem blue box) then bosch, ill then add
stay away from 2000-2003 to my personal list of Volvo trouble makers

My "new" 02 XC has a Bosch throttle body. That is a good thing. Some of the 02 models have had the transmission changed some time mid year.
You can tell easy enough if the TB has changed over. The Morelli is square under the manifold. The Bosch unit is smaller and more round.
The transmissions that are bad, the data plates can easily nee seen by looking down on the top mid way. The serial#s effected are 01C* through 01L. If you decide to get the 02, the issues can be remedied with a new modified B4 cover installed and it drained and filled till clean fluid shows, then the software upgrade.
Don't be too dishearted over these years of xc's.

My Son has a 2001 XC70 214000 miles third owner. While I'm not an expert, it has been a great car to date with no issues. I see many Bosch & Valeo parts under the hood. Gas, oil changes & Tires is all we've bought & we're in upsate NY.

The "bad" Magnetti-Marelli ETMs are 1999 -2001 with a few earlier build NON turbos in 2002.
You can't upgrade to a Bosch if you have a MM, period

so my son drove it and likes it...but hes not sure if he wants it,
he forgot the tranny # info I passed on to him, but said it shifted fine and as far as he could see, it looked well maintained. Hes just not thrilled with the gas milage the owner tells him it gets. 19-22mpg. It needs tires.
Timing belt sticker shows its will need to be done in about another 20k. no records and owner does not know if pcv was ever done, but he is not getting any smoke out of dipstick, I told him to check that
this owner has only had for two years, and wants to get a extended cab yota 4 wheel drive
if my son goes with it, and it does has the "bad" # trannys, what are the symptoms , and how easy to fix and availability fo the part you mentioned

You will have to replace the valve body and the shift solenoids. This is what I gathered from the research I have done. Also from what I have read is if it goes bad you will end up just replacing the transition.
From some other credible sources, the goods from late models fan be directly swapped. My plan just in case mine fails.
