Best MPG Ever

Post by Kirby J »

I haven't posted anything in a while so I thought I would share this with the crowd.
Last Monday night I drove my 92 740 NA wagon from Spring Hill TN down to Florence Al. 96 miles The weather was nice, about 71F, with little wind. I don't trust my fuel gauge, so I keep a close eye on the miles I drive. When I got to Florence, gas was cheap, $3.10 a gallon, so I filled up. I could only get 3.17 gallons in the tank, my math calls that 30 mpg. In a 740 wagon?? Thinking it might be a fluke, I filled up again when I got back to Hendersonville, TN. Distance 129 miles. That took 4.3 gallons. This also computes to just over 30 mpg. I don't get this kind of mileage all the time, but I have gotten over 28 on several interstate trips.
Explanation? AC off. Almost no stops on the trip. Few hills. A LOT of construction, resulting in a mostly 50mph cruise.
Your comments are welcome, but be gentle.

Oh, Florence Al now has a stunning Marriot resort and spa right on the river. Check it out!

Nice Kirby! How close to Stage 0 is your 740? Are you a meticulous owner, Seafoam in one hand, tire pressure gauge in the other, spark plug gappers in pockets?

25k since tune up. I do plugs and filters and dist. cap and rotor every 30k. A bit lax w/tire pressure, but I do rotate and balance every 2nd oil change, I do those every 4500-5000 miles, regular dino oil. Presently 245k, needs front shocks. The car regularly gets about 25 mpg at 65-70 mph. I just thought 30 was beyond the possible with this heavy old car.
