1994 850 Reseting PNP codes

Post by cnd8303 »

I have a 1994 850 nonturbo that had the flashing arrow of doom. The reverse lights were out for a few months and then on a cold day when I shifted, the arrow came on. It was never driven with the arrow flashing, and there were no problems with shifting prior to the light coming on. A mechanic friend just cleaned and replaced the 3 copper pins in the PNP switch using the writeup from polskamafia mjl (i don't know how to link it). The mechanic took it out and for a ride and she shifts like a dream, rides nice and my reverse lights are back, but the arrow is still flashing. I am trying to locate how to reset the ECU for this fault and can't seem to locate how, only that it is possible. The car sat for 3 weeks while waiting to be fixed and I was starting her up every few days (she doesn't like sitting and not running) and multiple times the flashing arrow was gone on startup but would return if I shifted, so I know the lights go away. So, with the back story, my question is "how do I reset the ECU using the flylead and button?" Which side and holes?

Also, this site is amazing and has been an incredible resource.

Welcome to MVS!

This link may be of interest to you -> https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/read-codes-volvo-850

Port A1 is for the transmission.

If that fails you could always disconnect the battery to clear any and all codes but it sounds like something else may be wrong with the trans if you still have the flashing arrow.

Read the codes from A1 and get back to us.

All of the stored codes need to be read immediately prior to resetting the system but it is very easy. I just bought a PNP repair kit that consists of new contacts. They are kinda pricey for what they are (around $25.00) but they are sure a lot cheaper than a new PNP switch. I hope to rebuild the switch this week but my wife has been using the car so I'm not sure when I will get to it. I'll post my thoughts on the kit after I do the job.

Hey Lee, did you use this kit, where did you get it, and would you recommend it? I am looking at the same symptoms, but I am going to let a shop look at it, as I have no time this week. Thanks!

This is the kit mentioned on the first page of the PNP DIY in the repair database, from back on 2010:

It's just 3 copper contacts, you can perhaps achieve achieve the same thing by filing the existing ones flat. Especially if you have a few old PNPs; open them all up and keep the best (longest) 3 contacts.

My son has kinda hijacked my Platinum and it hasn't been in the driveway long enough for me to fix the switch. I definitely need to deal with it before winter since that is when it gives me the most grief.

The repair kit actually looks easier than changing the switch since the connector doesn't need to come apart.
