What would you salvage from a junkyard?

Post by cn90 »

I just got back from a junk yard. There were a few Volvo 850 (1996 and 1997) models with 150K-200K miles.

The classic story...timing belt broke, no need to go further, the engine kaput, car ended up in junk yard.

I did not bring "serious" tools with me, but once I got home, I started pondering what I should "fish" from the car.

Mind you though, this is a fishing trip, I don't want to buy more fish than I can eat, so what would you guys grab from this car?

In other words, I don't want to keep a whole bunch of parts that I may never need...

And the MAFs. They're always good, there is always a need for them.

I might grab a couple TPS, it's so easy to get to. But don;t get me started ...

One of every sensor and relay for easy troubleshooting...narrow down what you think is wrong swap the part if it works buy a new one. Prevents you from parts changing expensive stuff when you don't need to.

What would you not?
Just kidding there, but since I've been going for parts for the Sedan for the past two years now, I always find something that might come in handy at a later date.
Now that I have the wagon I am glad I stocked up on relays, dash speakers, coils, throttle bodies, MAFs, cam sensors, door straps, clips, moldings, specific screws etc.

Think of all the simple to remove, expensive to buy new, Volvo specific items. Aside from those, I've picked everything from good replacement leather seats to fenders, radios, bumpers, door panels, headlight lenses... I have been surprised that I was able to eventually use many things for diagnostics and maintenance.

For me it is part of the experience of owning two of these cars now, to seek and utilize some nice items. It is a shame to see good parts go to the crusher.

^^^ This.

Until you try out some junkyard parts, you may think "Oh no, you always must buy brand new it is a safety hazard" or some similar malarkey. But the reality is there are multitudes of perfectly fine, quality OEM parts available at the yard for peanuts. Try them out, you will see. Great way to save a fair bit of $$ and avoid some headaches. Unfortunately, so few junkyards around me that I wish I could take advantage of it more ...

I could be the best advocate for this thread. I actually enjoy spending a sunny summer day at the junk yards.
I mention my recent purchase of the '96 855 T-5. Scrap parts got it home to work on. It's coming along nicely. The '93 sedan has been revived twice with scrap parts.

For instance, the tail lights from a '98 XC70, $8. ea., $32. total. Big difference.

What can be seen on the Sedan in the above photo alone.

'96 complete bumper. $38.
Hood. $42.
Fenders. $35.
Headlights
corner lights.
Headlight wipers and motors.
Header panel.
Radiator.
Air dam.
Sunroof glass.$20.('93 is mirror finish. Didn't like.) Still have if anyone wants.
Rear window w/defrost. $35. ($425. new!!)

This is a short list, trust me. I've documented both cars in the maintenance log if anyone cares to look.

I could have started this thread, may start a tutorial on good Pick and Pull tips, we'll see.

I enjoy going to the pick-n-pull near me. Sometimes I go there for repair practice. When a fresh car arrives, I check the heater core, speakers, and small trim pieces. I'm on the look out now for cv axles. I have pulled new rotors and a newish radiator, alternator, rear hatch struts, and the list goes on. Heck, I've even pulled some nice seats, bumpers, sunroof, rear bumper brackets, stereo's, and those tiny switch light bulbs. Roof rails, rear hatch, dash pads, seat skins, clusters, etc.

I guess I should probably change my VIN lol
