Auto Trans Fluid

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Auto Trans Fluid

Post by Ronald Shanks »

I know where the dip stick is and how to remove it, what are the other conditions required to correctly check the fluid level? Such as, engine running in park, not running in park, etc.

On the S80 the transmission fluid should only be checked with the transaxle temperature at about 190F (90C). This equates to about 30 minutes of normal driving. Check the fluid on the 'Hot' side of the dipstick. Obviously it should be between the Min & Max marks. If the temperature of the transaxle is above 190F then the fluid may be above the Max mark. This is not a problem.

Park on a level surface with the engine idling. Move the gear selector through all the gear positions ending in 'P'. Allow the engine to idle for 3 minutes. Check the fluid on the dipstick. If necessary top up by pouring fluid down the dipstick tube. The difference between the Min & Max marks is about 0.5 quart (0.5L). Do not overfill.
