98 S70 ac problems

Post by dale1volvo »

Hi I just purchased a 98 S70 Glt with 202k miles on it. I charged the air full with 134a. I changed both accumulators. When im on the highway the air is ice cold however upon city driving it just isnt cold enough the compressor always stays on and the freon is still full so it doesnt have a leak. Any suggestions? Thanks

Verify that the radiator fan comes on when you turn the AC on. Lack of air flow sounds like your problem. Two accumulators?

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.

The two accumulator thing has me scratching my ever balding head as well. They only have one.

Was a vacuum pulled on the system prior to recharging it with R-134A? If a vacuum wasn't pulled the system efficiency will be reduced.

There could also be a problem with the compressor clutch gap that causes the clutch coil to overheat and not keep the compressor engaged. You can repair the clutch by shimming it from the outside with something like bread clips or zip ties.
