Hello,
I'm Marco from Holland and since a week i'm also the victim of engine stalling with my 1998 C70 T5 automatic.
I replaced fuel filter allready, changed spark plugs and cleaned trottle body.
I always run my C70 on unleaded octane 98 and always use Castrol full synthetic extra power motor oil.
It's obvious(I think) i have a to rich mixture, because my spark plugs where carbon black when i plugged them out.
On my Apexi Boostcontroller(functions great over a year now) i have a digital view on my Rev's, trottle body opening, boost pressure, boost solonoid output and speed.
When the stalling occurs my rev's drop to 200-300 and then back to 800-900. after that when i push the trottle it dies, after blowing out a black cloud of smoke out the tailpipe. if i don't push the trottle when stalling occurs it eventually stays running at 200-400RPM's before it dies out with off course the black smoke.
Starting after this is difficult, so for short i can't go further than 2-3 miles because it dies out on me.
Because all the plugs are carbon black i suspect my ignition coil but after all the cases i've read the past two hours on this thread i don't know it anymore
Changing the cam shaft sensor looks like a good option also.
Personally i don't believe in just cleaning the TB, there is a cause to the polution of the TB. Cleaning it is just delaying execution.
But that's only my point of view
Anybody has an idea on my specific situation? (C70 T5)
Fuel delivery is not a problem from my point of view because i smell unburnt fuel mixture, that in combination with the black spark plugs that adds up.

There was a post yesterday of no power and dipping RPM's. We did 3 pages of posts back and forth. Fuel, spark, vacuum leaks, electricals, all were fine. The solution was finally found, however. It was 2 teeth off on the timing belt. Please everyone who is having issues with their car dying or lack of power, even black exhaust, it could be that the timing advancement is off due to inproper TB installation (intake and exhause). This would make perfect sense and an issue that hardly anyone would even think of checking....but easy to check or have checked.

A few months ago i brought the car for an new distrubution belt. After the installation a heard a rattel so i went back to the dealer and he forgot to change the pulleys, so he changed the pulleys after all. And now i'm thinking about it, that's when the trouble started.
What can i say to the dealer without giving him the feeling i'm pointing him as the rooth of my problems?
They don't like me because i demand a good job for the money paid, and i have difficult questions.
They ratter have someone that does not ask questions but just pay the bill.
I have little choice when it comes to choosing a dealer because there are not many of them over here, and my car is not running due to this problem.
And would this be a guarentee item or am i again paying the bill for this Sh..

Just ask him politely to check it for you again. I'm not sure what the problem is...you're the one paying the money, right?

My 94 was doing the same thing....went thru all the vacuum hose, turbo hose, IAC hose / cleaning, Fuel filter replacing gneral stuff.....
Replacing the fuel pump fixed the problem temporarily. What I found will surprise you. I have a 94 855T. The Fuel Pump Motor inside the tank has a an outlet Hose on the top to transfer the fuel from the Pump Gears thru the hose and out to the hose that goes to your fuel rail. Well that small hose that is connected to the pump motor has a small Clamp. The clamp was loose on mine and when the fuel pressure was high enough, it would slide off the pipe and not let enough fuel pressure get to the engine, (like sucking thru a straw with a hole in it ) starving the engine for fuel and thus stalling it. Once I tightened the clamp, I had a New Ger-Animal! This happened a couple of years ago.
Lately as in today, It stalled on my wife and gave a CEL. My OBD code reader points to the MAF sensor Low Input. The last time this happened I changed the air filter and that was about 8 months ago. Cleaned filter until tommorrow when I can go get one, but cleared the code in the mean time..It hasn't come back yet, no stalling yet, and this was 50 miles ago. So If youre stalling I would start with these 2. HOpe this helps.

Uncleboost...hope that light stays off and a new filter works for you. Eventually all of the MAF sensors do die (as mine did last year and it scared me to death...bucking and smoking and rattling) and it was sudden and catostrophic. Anyway, my point is that if that doesn't solve it, at least you know what you have to do. Make sure and get a Bosch (OEM) and not an after market part. There is another maker putting these out but people have had nothing but trouble with them.

Problem fixed apparently. After doing all the previous steps and 90 percent of what everyone else has done here, the car has been great. Last thing I did was change my battery. Apparaently the one I had was weak and caused the wonky restart.MV850T wrote:Well that didn't work. EGR hose or line was clear, almost new.MV850T wrote:Well I got 3 more codes yesturday. He said there is one for EGR. THey kept it for an extra day because last time they cleared the 16 codes they said the car was perfect and an hour later it wouldn't re-start.
I'm picking it up later today.
Keep ya updated.
I think it's time to sell this car, which is a shame, because I just got it love it.
No one knows whats goin on at all, dealers, mechs, speciality shops, I'm at witts end.

'93 850 GLT/170k - About a year and a half ago it died on me while on interstate and since then the problem has persisted. It will die on me at a redlight, deaccelerating, high speed, low speed, but never accelerating. It always starts after 15-30 seconds of keeping the key switch on. I do not have any engine lights on or reported error codes. I assume it has something to do with the fuel delivery. There are no symptons or warnings, it is almost like someone yanked my keys out and killed it. Doesn't matter if my tank is full or low, hot or cold outside, humid or dry, etc. What burns me is it will not do it for a week or a month then blamo it will die on me 6 times on the way to work. I have replaced/fixed the fuel pump relay, plugs, wires, dis. cap and motor, fuel filter, fuel pump and have cleaned the throttle body. I even dropped the gas tank and drained it thinking maybe water or gremlins were in there? I dunno, why not. Seems after I fix/replace one of the mentioned it runs well for a while and I think, "Hey it must be fixed!" then the 6 stalls to work happens. After I replaced the dis. cap and motor, plugs and wires (care really needed it) it did not stall for nearly 2 months.
Other than this no other problems! I love my Volvo =) I am going to try the suggestions given in the previous posts. Great resource though. Just thought I would chime in with a "me too!".
