Guys,

I am having the reverse of the problem many of you have with your shifters.

My transmission gear selector can be moved between every gear, including park, without any brake pedal application and without pressing the override button the the gear selector button on the backside of the gear stalk.

Anyhow know how I can fix this? I'm using extra caution to ensure i use the parking brake for now.

Thanks!

With the car in Park and the engine running can you hear/ feel the park lock solenoid clicking on and off as you press/ release the footbrake, with your hand on the gear lever you should be able to feel the click? - Mike

Mike,

I do not hear or feel the typical click. The shifter is very loose in that wi a slight push it simply shifts in and out of park , reverse neutral etc....regardless of brake application or shifter button application.

Not sure if this is what you need but you can look into it.

I don't think this has anything to do with the microswitch or solenoid.
That's just the system for keeping it locked in park until the key is on
and the brake is depressed. This sounds more like the mechanism in
the shifter console. An "Open it up and Have a Look" sort of problem.

My 1999 S70 is doing the same thing. Once the center console is removed, what am I looking for and is there any available diagrams of this mechanism?
Thanks

What kind of shape is the shift lever button in?
Does it move smoothly in and out?

Today the shift button seemed a little stickier, when I would depress it, it would not return to its normal position without pressing on the side of the button and pushing out.

I just got this car with only 91000 miles on it, so it doesn't look like it has been beat on much.

Shifter button on the stick is good. The over-right switch is a little finicky. I can never tell if it is engaged or disengaged. I'll take the console off shortly to inspect further.

There is a cable that runs from the column to the shifter. I have seen cars that the system was damaged in and there was some weird modifications done to them that included a wooden piece of wood wedged into the shifter area under the console.

Does the shifter move without pushing the button? I think mine did.
