2000 S70 NA serpentine belt removal

Post by righty01 »

I have a 2000 S70 5 speed Manual 2.4 non turbo. I cannot figure out how to get the serpentine belt off. I cannot figure how to maneuver the tensioner pulley. I have looked all over the internet and none of the pictures look like my pulley assembly. I have no where to use a 3/8" socket, nor a place to put an allen wrench to hold tensioner. Attached are pictures (not very good) but they show where my tensioner is in the middle of the pulley assembly. Does anyone have experience with this motor?

There's a T60 torx hole in the tensioner which is used after '00

Use this to release.

If yours is a original tensioner (which it looks to be) just use a 14mm long ring spanner without offset to release. It's awkward to gain access to. Most mechanics use extended specialist low profile tools to undo these.

It is an original, so that is why I don't see any Torx or regular socket hole in bracket. I am not sure what a ring spanner is. Can I get one at a local auto parts dealer?

I can clearly see a 14mm bolt head in your picture. Use this bolt to release the tension. A ring spanner is just a regular wrench with multiple sides.

A really long one is required or if you jack up the car you have access from underneath with a shorter one.

my vote is for a long 14mm wrench. the ideal tool would be a serpentine belt tool with a 14mm attachment

Ring spanner is Brit/Aussie for box end wrench.

Access is tight. It can be done, but it's not easy. Every time I have to remove the
belt I wish I had the serp belt tool kit.

In one video it shows using a standard wrench with socket/ratchet. 14mm on the bolt, other end clears to fit a socket with ratchet. In such a set up your hand is above the engine.

Looks like the belt has been flipped inside out for a while.

I believe that is a double sided belt that utilizes grip on both sides to drive pulleys.
