Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
There is a metal bar that the shifter button raises and lowers, and this bar prevents park to reverse shift changes.
I found that my bar was broken in half down the middle, both pieces laying on the floorboard. I tried to mod it to make it fit again but I am not comfortable with it as a long term solution (safety...a good reason to use the parking brake with auto trans). Also, my bevel was cracked anyhow, and upon disassembly the gear indicator broke, there is a plastic white tab that slides into the shifter, this is what moves the orange drive indicator...good reason to replace the whole thing. I think the entire shift assembly must be replaced to make sure this goes down smoothly and is safe. It looks like four bolts and a clip to remove the tranny shift cable. Anyone have experience with this? I'll be buying a new shift assembly soon.
Thanks again for all the suggestions and help.

Sounds like a great excuse to spend a day at a junkyard with some Volvos in it. Any close by?Indy V70 XC wrote:Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
