02 V40 steering angle

Post by mtroxel »

Girlfriend's car, so I can't go out to the garage and look at it.

Last weekend I noticed the steering wheel is about 25 degrees to the right when going straight ahead. So either it's been aligned way off, or someone removed the steering wheel and put it back on without paying attention.

I know on my Audi, if the wheel was always turned that far, the clock spring would tell the ABS that we're turning right.

This V40 must have something like that doesn't it?

Could someone have re-connected the steering cloumn after a repair w/o finding the center of the rack?

Normally with a wheel alignment the steering well is reset to a central position.
It's quite annoying when the steering wheel yokes are at odd angles when driving straight.
Could the steering geometry have been knocked out of alignment at some point?
i.e. wheel hit a kerb or a pothole in road seal.

Removal of the steering wheel and incorrect replacement only other option. :?:

Not sure what's happened. But when I turn the wheel so that it's level, both front wheels are obviously turned to the left. I think next time I see her, I'll put a piece of tape on the top of the steering wheel and go from lock to lock. The tape should end up at the mirror of the same position at each lock. That should answer the question.

Another possibility is that someone has removed the steering wheel to perform maintenance on the instrument console, igniton switch or antennae ring, or to access the steering column stalks to the wipers, indicators etc but overlooked straightening the front wheels when replacing the steering wheel on the column spline.
