Stalling Problem
Stalling Problem
I have a '92 Volvo 240 and whenever it rains I have a stalling problem. It is fine driving until I reach my second red ligth of the day, which is in the moddle of a busy intersection. All is going fine until the light turns green and I hit the gas. Suddnely the car will sputter and turn off, but all the electrical things work, just it wont move. I have to turn the key off, wiggle the shifter and then turn the car over again to get a sluggish start, and then I am fine. Until I hit another red light. My car is an automatic and I am really stumped. My dad has tried by spraying silicon on the electrical but that only works temporarily. It is supposed to rain alot this week so I am worried. Does anyone have a clue what could be going on? I'm a very new driver, only for about a month and I am scared to drive in the rain now. Any suggestions?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
It certainly sounds like an electrical problem, probably plug leads or distributor cap being damp and causing a run to earth (ground).
Bill.

What is the silicon being used? I have always used Holts Dampstart and found it to be good for about 6 months on one spraying. My dad has tried by spraying silicon on the electrical

I always use dielecrtic grease, but I think just about anything is fine. Just re-do it in about 6 months if you sprayed it. http://www.autoaccessconnect.com/peditugr0oz.html

Dampstart puts a covering over the leads and cap that, when it dries, keeps the dampness off the actual surface.
As a temporary measure you can spray the leads and cap with WD40 to remove the moisture.
If you should use Dampstart, or its US equivalent, take the cap and leads off the car, clean them and then dry them thoroughly with a hair dryer before spraying them with the Dampstart.
