Radiator Fan Problems

Post by kent sison »

Hi Guys,

The radiator fan of my 2000 volvo s40 wont go consistently, sometimes it goes on after a minute or so and I can see the temp guage going up. Sometimes, it is ok, like a few seconds only. What seems to be the problem? Is it the thermostat, the relay or the sensor? And lastly, where is the location of the relay and the thermostat? Thank you!

By the way, I am from the Philippines and it is hot here so the fan should always work.

Refer to this link below:
Replace thermostat volvo 850 s70 v70 c70 or xc70

It's general for several models but explains the thermostat side of things.
The S40's timing belt cover may require unclipping to help access the thermostat housing bolts easier.
Thermostat housing is located immediately left of the front inlet manifold, and besides the timing belt housing, bolted into the top of the head.
Your temperature gauge should in fact drop back nearer normal when the radiator fan cuts in and the coolants temperature starts to lower, not rise towards the red ???
The fan should not start up until the engine and the temperature gauge reach at least approximate normal hot operating temperature.
Although you do live in a warmer climate zone the fan should not be operating constantly, but would of course operate more frequently than if the same car were in a more cooler climate zone. Especially in slow, city traffic.
Advise you get a fault code scan (OBD11) done to ascertain if the temperature sensor may be faulty.
