Volvo S70, V70, 850 Dash Removal Noise or Evaporator Repair

Post by rspi »

My daughter's Volvo S70 dash was making more noise than a kung-fu sward fight so I pulled it and repaired the mounting tabs. So if you need to pull the dash to repair the tabs to stop the noise or replace the evaporator, this video will walk you through the process.

Robert,

I just went through the same thing, again, on the Platinum. If you can find a salvage dash than that is the way to go if the price is right. I had a writeup about 5 years ago with a method of repairing and reinforcing the mounts. After 5 years I had to pull the same dash and the problems persisted. The reinforced mounts helped the mounts that had not already broken but they failed on the mounts that were broken like yours. The dash can be repaired but it is neither quick nor easy. Here is a preview of what mine looked like after I rebuilt the mounts. In your case this would be fairly easy since the bulk of the mounts are still in one piece.

I won't win any prizes for pretty or my torch welding abilities but here is what the dash looked like just before I put it back in.

I had to fabricate brackets to take all of the load off of the original mounts.

I am going to update my original dash mount repair writeup but this was done fairly cheap with a combination of 5" by 7" steel and aluminum roof flashing tabs and about 3 tubes of JB Weld epoxy.

While the dash is out you can also repair the lower dash panel mounts with JB Weld Marine epoxy which is like putty that gets hard.

I think the front mounts fail b/c the side mounts break first, leaving the complete weight of the dash hanging on those front points. When my dash started to squeak at the right side b/c that mount had failed, I rehung it by getting a substantial (3/16"?) self-starting sheet metal screw through the side plastic dash casting into the A pillar. You need to remove the dash pad to do this. Now that end and probably half the front of the dash hang on that screw. The pillar pipe is substantial enough to hold the screw as long as its very tight. I experimented with different drill sizes in a piece of test stock to find one the smallest bit that would still enable me to grind the screw in. That took care of the squeak and so far the front mounts have held, even through several hellacious pothole winters.

Well, I hope the strap fix I did will hold up for a while.

There was a good dash in the junk yard that they wanted $50 for, which I would have gladly paid if the color matched. :(

I have been traveling all over the eastern time zone so I have not had time to edit my supporting video's. I'll likely do it tomorrow. Here is the before and after sound video:

Lee, thanks for the tips. I wasn't sure if JB would hold the dash up as I would like it to. I tried plastic epoxy that did peal off of the dash pad under side. I was going to try JB on several other parts of the dash but wasn't sure if it would hold.

The dash was loose in the spring, but moving that car up to Cincy finished it off. Rough patchy roads on the HD Bilstiens was to much for it.

Yes, I seen that fix that Johnny did a while back. I think that might work for the 850's if you catch it before all of the tabs break. Once you have all of them break, nothing less than pulling the dash will stop the noise.
