1998 C70 2.3 - what is this hole?

Anyone know what this hole is for, and if something should be plugging/routed to it?

I did a PCV system replacement and tune up over the weekend, and put a new oil filler cap on just now. I was just out there cleaning all the puddles of oil out of the nooks in the valve cover when I noticed this hole. Tell me it's just a really deep nook, and not really a hole. :?

There is some posts on the site for that hole and if I remember it has something to do with a piece if the car is sold out of this country. Some people. like myself, have had leaks out of it but those mostly do to pressure built up from clogged PCV system. Nothing to worry about.
