00 s80 grinding/noise at 30 - 60 mph

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

00 s80 grinding/noise at 30 - 60 mph

Post by fn42 »

Between 30 and 60 mph I get a slight grinding through the steering wheel, any tips for narrowing down axle vs wheel bearing? There's no play in the front wheels top to bottom so I am hesitant to throw a new wheel bearing at it. The noise goes away when I am turning right and I have no other symptoms of a bad axle (no clicking noises, no leaking grease).

I had slightly similar problem.
When I was going at about 60-70 mph I would hear some soft of HOUL noise. But when I turned wheel to the left it would stop. Went to a local mechanic and they listened to it through a stethoscope.
I just decided to change the bearing and I was right. It was my left bearing.
Maybe yours worn out already and makes grinding noise.
Try that option.
Good luck!

yep it was the right wheel bearing. I popped the axles out on both sides and rotated the bearings by hand & the right one felt like it was full of dirt.

Check out Youtube for videos on changing axles. Even if it's not a Volvo, the procedure is pretty much the same. For instance I did my V70 and my daughter's Hyundai - no big difference between the two.

I just removed the axle bolt and 2 strut bolts and tapped it out. I had enough room to do everything (even fit an impact wrench in to get the hub bolts out) without removing the ball joint or tie rod
