First step is look at the fluid - is it pinkish (good) or dark brown to black (bad)? Smell it - does it smell burnt?

There is a pinned thread in the DIY section here for how to replace the trans fluid. There are two options, you can disconnect one of the hoses and try to swap almost all of the fluid in one session, or you can remove the drain plug on the case and swap about 3-4 quarts (total capacity is like 12 quarts).

In this case might start with just draining the pan and refill the 3-4 quarts that comes out that way.

Ok thank you. I will try it this weekend. Then take it to a mechanic to get a tune up, new pnp switch and an oil change.

Probably should have mentioned I got the copper contacts on the sweeping arm to shine with a very small fine flat file. If I had some wet & dry, say 400 grit that would have been a lot better but I had run out.

Again, yes the Vick's was the only petroleum based product I had around. Somehow 2 bottles of petroleum jelly had dissappeared from the workshop :o

I'm with Justin on your transmission problem. There is more than meets the eye with your transmission. I would definitely try the drain & fill FIRST. You can live without reverse lights.

Good instinct; you can break it. Does it move up the shaft at all? If so, try this: move it all the way down and use a file or sandpaper to clean the sides of the shaft. PB Blaster it, and give it a gentle try.

well I already got it but I had to wiggle it quite a bit to get it out, then the connector was tricky, there was no screws in the switch I had to drill every one of them and replace in holes with screws, got it all clean replace it but... the problem is not gone, still have the same symptoms.
